Can You Dig It? - Summer 2

This half-term, some of our Topic sessions will be based around the topic of 'Can You Dig It?'

Within our topic sessions this half-term, we will be exploring evolution and inheritance, along with the life and discoveries of Mary Anning (British fossil collector 1799 - 1847).  We may even be creating our own fossils and fossil-themed artwork!

The Great Plague - Summer 1 (mini-topic)

This half-term, some of our Topic sessions will be based around the topic of 'Can y'.

Within this mini-project, we will be exploring this significant time in history, in terms of what 'The Plague' was, what caused it, how it spread and how it was treated.  We will be carrying out our own research into this area, as well as using it as the basis for creating our own non-chronological reports within our English lessons.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Spring term and part of Summer 1

This half-term, our Topic sessions will all be based around the topic of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'.

Within our Topic sessions this half-term, we will be exploring the science behind evolution and inheritance with an emphasis on the geography and history of the incredible Galapagos Islands and the ideas and theories of Charles Darwin, whilst familiarising ourselves with the style of Mary Ellen Taylor, who combines watercolour painting and sketching to create images of plants and animals from the Galapagos within our art lessons.

Additionally, we will be developing our understanding of living things and their habitats including classifying animals and grouping species based upon their characteristics.  Throughout, we will maintain a strong focus upon the work and legacy of David Attenborough, as well as the various debates surrounding animal rights.

World War II- Autumn 2

This half-term, our Topic sessions will all be based around the topic of 'World War II', although we will be spending the first week or two exploring the World War I Centenary too!

Within our Topic sessions this half-term, we will be exploring the geography and history behind ‘World War II’ in terms of what it was like to grow up in wartime, experiencing evacuation, rationing, propaganda and The Blitz as a part of daily life.

The Railway Children - Autumn 1

This half-term, our Topic sessions will all be based around the topic of 'The Railway Children' and will be introduced by the annual performance of a visiting theatre company!

Our Topic sessions this year will, as usual, be linked heavily to our daily English sessions, so, with this in mind, we will be using 'The Railway Children' as the stimulus for a unit focusing on both the Edwardian period and the history of inventors and inventions.  Within this topic, we will be conducting an artist study of Leonardo da Vinci, with a particular focus on his flying machine (also known as the "ornithopter").  This will enable us to develop our scientific understanding by carrying out investigations into the properties which result in the most effective ‘flying machines’, reflecting upon the effects of various factors.
