Maths Spring 2
Our daily ‘Fluent in Five’ arithmetic challenges will be continuing, in order to prepare children for the upcoming arithmetic test and support them in developing the vital skills that underpin reasoning problems, whilst ‘Counting’ and ‘Learn Its’ elements of CLIC will enable us to further develop our understanding of number patterns and crucial times tables skills. Any support that you can give with this would be much appreciated, especially surrounding improving the speed of children’s times tables recall, as last half-term we noticed that weaknesses with these were impacting considerably upon accuracy in calculations, with many marks being needlessly lost!
In Maths, we will be spending the first week back continuing our in-depth exploration of fractions, decimals and percentages, whilst the second week will be 'Mock SATs Week' for Y6. We will then be exploring problems involving ratio and scaling, before moving on to thinking algebraically, including generating and describing number sequences, finding pairs of numbers that satisfy an equation with 2 unknown variables and familiarising ourselves with circle-based formulae, including those linked to radius, diameter and circumference.
This formula work will also provide us with an opportunity to recognise when it is possible to use formulae to express the perimeter, area and volume of shapes, whilst we will also be able to apply this algebraic understanding to explore the formula required to convert between miles and kilometres, at which time we will also recap our understanding of converting between standard units of length, mass, volume and time, before solving problems related to this. Throughout our maths learning this year, we will continue our emphasis on solving number and practical problems, including both single and multi-step word problems amongst other reasoning problems, as well as further strengthening our underpinning arithmetic skills.
