King Edward Primary School Excitement + Determination = Success

Autumn

Maths - Autumn 1

The first week back will be spent engaging in some fun and engaging problem-solving tasks which will help us to get back to thinking mathematically and applying our problem-solving skills.  We have lots of exciting and challenging tasks and problems planned for everyone to enjoy!

We will then be focusing heavily on  ‘Place Value’.  Within this unit, we will be reading, writing, ordering and comparing numbers and determining the value of each digit.  We will also be working on rounding whole numbers to a required degree of accuracy and using negative numbers in context, including calculating intervals across zero.

This half-term, we will also be exploring ‘The Four Operations’ This will involve developing our written methods of multiplication and division as well as identifying common factors, multiples and prime numbers and further developing our abilities to perform mental calculations, including those with mixed operations and increasingly large numbers, as well as those which require knowledge of the order of operations.

Throughout our maths learning this year, we will continue our emphasis on solving number and practical problems, including both single and multi-step word problems amongst other reasoning problems, as well as further strengthening our underpinning arithmetic skills.

Maths - Autumn 2

In Maths, we will be spending spending the first two weeks back working on 'The Four Operations', including square, cube and prime numbers, the order of operations (BIDMAS) and factors and multiples.

Moving on to a four week unit on 'Fractions' which will make up the majority of this half-term's Maths, we will be simplifying, comparing and ordering fractions, as well as calculating with fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Finally, we will be exploring 'Geometry' through co-ordinate activities involving all four quadrants and drawing, translating and reflecting simple shapes.

Throughout our maths learning this year, we will continue our emphasis on solving number and practical problems, including both single and multi-step word problems amongst other reasoning problems, as well as further strengthening our underpinning arithmetic skills.
