English Autumn 1
In a slight break from tradition, this year for the first time our whole-school topic which kicks off the school year will be based upon a picture book! Entitled ‘The Circus Ship’, it is written by Chris Van Dusen and will be a fantastic stimulus for lots of excellent topic and English work.
We will begin by revisiting our understanding of the difference between formal and informal language, before building up to creating our own newspaper reports detailing the events from the book. We will also be developing our speaking and listening skills alongside our non-fiction writing through exploring debates, balanced arguments and persuasive letters. Finally, we will be writing our own diary entries linked to the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic.
Alongside our English learning, we will be deepening our grammatical understanding by revising key SPAG concepts, from a variety of punctuation to word classes and tenses.
