King Edward Primary School Excitement + Determination = Success

Maths is a specific area of the EYFS Curriculum. The Maths curriculum is divided into two sections: Number and Shape, Space and Measure. At King Edward, maths is taught on a daily basis. We follow the White Rose Maths Scheme. We want children to develop a really good sense of numbers to 10. This will stand them in good stead for the maths that follows as they move through the school.

Children need to be able to:

  • Understand the link between numbers and quantity (representing numbers in different ways.)
  • Investigate how quantities are composed of smaller parts (6 can be two 3s or three 2s or 4 and 2 or 5 and 1 etc.)
  • Know how the numbers relate to one another and be able to compare and order them.
  • Explore how quantities change when you add more items or take items away.

Children are provided with regular opportunities to practice their counting and subitising (how many) skills and revisit prior learning. Opportunities to practice new skills through play are also encouraged in the different areas of provision.

Your child may already be able to recite the number names to twenty and beyond but a sense of what those numbers mean develops gradually with repeated experiences in different contexts.

These sessions are followed up through identifying next steps for children using our OWLING focus board.
