Spring term

 

Maths

This week we have been consolidating our knowledge of height, capacity and weight. The children explored heavy and light objects, containers which were full and empty and using the large sheet of paper to record how tall the children were in class. They also realised Mrs Tagg was the tallest teacher in Nursery.

Outside classroom

The children were engaged in writing activities this week. They enjoyed drawing pictures of Easter animals and using marks to write labels too.

Easter

In Nursery, we talked about Easter. The children explored a variety of activities such as an Easter egg hunt, showing their Easter bonnets on the Easter hat parade, drawing Easter themed objects and decorating Easter eggs.

Forest School

The children decided to make bird feeders to encourage wild birds to visit our school forest area. The children had lots of fun!

Maths

This week we have been exploring capacity using the vocabulary – full, half full and empty. The children have loved playing with containers in the water trays inside and outside of nursery.

The hungry caterpillar

In Nursery, we read the story ‘The hungry caterpillar’ and sang the caterpillar song too. The children spoke about the changes that occur during the life cycle of a caterpillar and we observed our caterpillar’s in nursery. They have changed quite a lot recently and are now in the chrysalis stage.

Forest School

Over the last couple of weeks during forest school the children have been learning about minibeasts and where they live. They all decided it would be a good idea to build a ‘bug hotel’ and then find minibeast to live there too.

Maths

We have been learning about weighing objects. We have used the words – light, lighter, heavy, heavier and balanced.

The children explored weighing objects and described if they were heavy, light or balanced.

Science week

This week we have been exploring Science week by looking at time. We were unable to walk to the park where we planned to measure how long it took us to walk there and back so the children drew a map on large paper in Nursery. We have also explored which objects float or sink and watched our plants and caterpillars grow.

Careers day

In Nursery, we all dressed up as a variety of different careers. We shared with all our friends what we wanted to be when we grow up. Lots of us wanted to be a police officer, doctor, chef, teacher, vet or nurse.

 

World book day

The children celebrated world book day by wearing bedtime clothes and taking part in fun reading and writing activities too.

Maths

This week we have been exploring the size of objects. We have used the words ‘tall’, ‘taller’, ‘short’, ‘shorter’, ‘long’, ‘longer’ etc to describe the size of an object. We have also compared the size of objects too.

Sam plants a sunflower

WC: 4th March 2024

In Nursery, we read the story ‘Sam plants a sunflower’. We discussed how the seed changes over time and grows into a beautiful sunflower. The children have explored planting sunflower seeds, painting sunflowers and investigating minibeasts too.

Forest School

During Forest School the children continued to explore using paint in the natural environment. They mixed primary colours and painted lines and circles on large sheets of material.

Maths

This week we have been exploring number 6. The children had practise showing 6 on a ten frame and showing 6 with their fingers too.

 

Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?

WC: 26th February 2024

In Nursery, we read the story ‘Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?' We named all the animals in the story and identified the different colours too. The children enjoyed exploring the colour brown in the playdough, mud kitchen, crafts and the messy tray with compost.

Forest school

During forest school this week the children explored painting with natural materials. They all had great fun!!

Explorer

James Ketchell spoke to the children in Nursery about his adventures climbing Mount Everest and sailing across an ocean in a small boat. The children we fascinated by his stories and they enjoyed watching his personal videos of the journeys he had been on. At the end of the discussion he allowed a child to try on his clothes he wore when climbing Mount Everest.

Pancakes

In Nursery, we discussed ‘Shrove Tuesday – Pancake day’ and we enjoyed exploring pancakes. We pretended to make pancakes, create pancake faces and enjoyed tasty pancakes too. The children listened carefully to the story ‘Mr Wolf’s Pancakes’.

Growing

We read the story ‘Jasper’s Beanstalk’ and discussed what plants need to grow and the children individually planted a bean to grow their own beanstalk like Jasper did in the story. We will be watering it everyday and watching them grow over the next few weeks.

Maths

This week we have been consolidating our knowledge of numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The children have explored writing numbers and matching the numeral to the correct amount.

Phonics

The phoneme we have learnt this week is:

‘k’

The children have been identifying the initial phonemes in words and orally blending words too.

Valentine’s day

We celebrated Valentine’s day in Nursery this week. We explored the colour red, pink and white. We enjoyed making Valentine cards and pictures too.

Snow day

Today it snowed and we loved exploring how the snow felt. We went outside to make foot prints on the playground, build a snowman and touched the cold, soft snow.

Chinese New Year

In Nursery, we celebrated Chinese New Year. We tried different Chinese foods which we all thought were delicious!! The children listened to Chinese music and created their own dragon dance.

Safer internet day

This week we read the story ‘Penguinpig’ as part of safer internet day. We discussed the importance of telling a grown-up if something isn’t right or a new picture appears on a tablet, I-pad, computer etc. Mrs Tagg asked the children questions about what to do if certain things happened while playing on a tablet, I-pad or computer. The children always responded that they should ask a grown-up for help.

Outdoor learning

We have enjoyed exploring the outside classroom this week in Nursery. We have practised waiting our turn to use the balance bikes and carefully climbed the climbing wall.

Maths

We have been deepening our knowledge of number 5. We practised counting 5 objects and finding different ways of making ‘5’. E.g. 3 and 2 make 5

Playing with friends

This week the children have been busy playing with friends in nursery. We have all been trying to share toys with friends and take turns when playing games.

Phonics

In Phonics we learnt about the 'c' sound:

Jackson Pollock

This week we studied the artist ‘Jackson Pollock’. We shared with the children that he is quite a sad artist and likes to paint with dark colours. Each piece of art work he produced had the colour black. The children explored painting in the style of Jackson Pollock.

 

 

Maths

We have been exploring number 5. We practised counting 5 objects and looked at the numerals 1-5 too. The children enjoyed singing our maths song of the week

‘5 Little Speckled Frogs’.

Phonics

In Phonics we learnt about the 'o' sound:

* orange

* ostrich

* octopus

Penguin small

This week our key text is ‘Penguin small’. We shared the text and talked about how the penguin was the last penguin in the North Pole and he was the smallest penguin too. We have explored penguin games and investigated ice with toy penguins.

We have been deepening our understanding of number 4. We have been subitising 4 and talking about different ways of making 4. E.g. 1 and 3 make 4.

In Phonics we learnt about the 'g' sound:

The polar bear and the snow cloud

This week our key text is ‘The polar bear and the snow cloud’. We shared the text and talked about how the polar bear feels alone. We have explored artic animals and investigated ice.

Forest Schools

This week we went on an Elephant hunt! We searched for different elephants in the natural woodland and recognized the different colours.

 

Elmer

This week our key text is ‘Elmer’. We shared the text and talked about how we are all different. We have explored different colours in the environment and used different colours when painting and drawing.  

Maths

We have been learning all about number 3. We have used 1-1 counting correspondence and say one number name for each item in order e.g. 1, 2, 3. We will know the total number when counting (cardinal principle).

Expressive Art and Design

We have been exploring different materials and textures linked to the text. We have used our fingers to manipulate clay to make caves.

We’re going on a bear hunt

This week our key text is 'We're going on a Bear Hunt'. We shared the text and build in actions for part for the story. We used our senses to explore materials such as grass (long, wavy grass) dirty mud (mud), dark materials (cave), water (river), cotton wool (snowstorm). We created a map of the story on large paper and act it out using small world people.
