King Edward Primary School and Nursery Excitement + Determination = Success

Governors

All schools in England have a Governing Body which is responsible for overseeing many of the strategic decisions of the school.  A key role is to act as a ‘critical friend’: to support, to challenge, to ask questions, ultimately to represent the school community.

The Governing Body works in close partnership with the Head Teacher, staff and the local authority.  Whilst the Head Teacher is responsible for the day to day running of the school, the governors are involved with such things as staffing, curriculum, school buildings and finance. It ensures the school functions well and maintains the proper range of academic and social objectives.

The composition of the present governing body, under the 2012 School Governance Regulations, was decided upon by the governing body and consists of:

  • The Head Teacher
  • One elected staff governor
  • Four elected parent governors
  • One appointed local authority governor
  • Seven co-opted governors

The standard term of office for a governor is four years. The chair and vice-chair are elected annually at the first meeting of the academic year.

The Chair of Governors is Phee Smith, who can be contacted by leaving a message via the school office.

I came to Nottingham some years ago to work at Boots. My last job was working with an Education Charity helping young people understand the world of work.  I’ve been a school governor for a long time in different schools in Nottingham, starting as a parent governor at my children’s school. The last school I worked with was Chilwell School before joining King Edwards two years ago.

Mrs Kerry BerryAttendance & Arts LinkCo-opted

Term of Office:

29/10/20-29/10/24

I feel very proud to be a governor at King Edward Primary School. I was co-opted in October 2017 and I’ve been a regular volunteer in school since 2013.  I have a son and daughter who bath attended King Edwards and are now at Brunts.

King Edward is a large yet friendly primary school and the children, staff and senior leaders are working incredibly hard to make King Ed’s the very best it can be. The governing body are very much an active part in this mission. I applied because both of my children were incredibly happy and have flourished with the experiences and opportunities they have had. I believe that every child should achieve their full potential, have fun in their learning and feel safe and happy at school. I hope that I can do my part in this and to ensure that it continues.

Some of my governor roles include attendance, SEND and safeguarding as well as being a regular at meetings and governor days in school.

Mr Sean Holborn Co-opted

Term of Office:

17/05/23-17/05/27

I have been a community and now co-opted Governor at King Edward's since 2011.  I live and work in the close local community.  I am married with two children who have both happily attended King Edward Primary school.

In my role as a governor I am a critical friend of the school, willing to ask questions, open to ideas and find my role at the school a rewarding and positive experience.

I have travelled extensively in Europe.  I am an amateur gigging musician, golfer, enjoy dog walking and can best be described as an all-round “social, but old, geek” according to my kids!
