Health

From the 1930’s right up to at least the 1960’s, the school logs record regular and frequent inspections by the school nurse. They also record visit from the school dentist, who would stay for a few days at a time to perform check-ups.

Diptheria, whooping cough, scarlet fever, chicken pox and measles were still endemic and serious, sometimes killer, childhood diseases during this time. The school logs record that attendance sometimes dropped as low as 50% owing to epidemics, especially during the 1930’s and 40’s.

There also seems to have been many more harsh winters than now, with attendance being affected by colds and flu or the school being closed because of deep snow.
