King Edward Primary School and Nursery Excitement + Determination = Success

Literacy

Literacy is a specific area of our Curriculum.

This area includes:

  • Reading - word reading
  • Reading - comprehension
  • Writing - composition
  • Writing - grammar and punctuation
  • Writing - spelling
  • Writing - handwriting

The aim of this area focuses on developing children's number skills and gain a good understanding of numerical patterns.

At King Edward, Literacy sessions are delivered through story time, play and group activities. There are plenty of opportunities for children to explore and deepen their knowledge of reading and writing. Our story of the week inputs are created with the children using signs and pictures, these are then developed through story maps so the children can embed the key knowledge and re-tell the story.

At King Edward, we encourage home reading through our children's library.

Phonics - Phonics is taught on a daily basis during group time, focusing on Phase 1 aspects. We provide a large focus on Phase 1 skills through Continuous Provision. These sessions are followed up through identifying next steps for children using our OWLing focus board
